The carving art in Yuyao

The carving art in Yuyao can be said to have a long, long history. Among the cultural relics excavated from Hemudu antiquity site 7,000 years ago, there are a lot of carving works, the most representative one of which is the ivory carving “Two Birds Escorting the Sun” that is regarded as the symbol of Hemudu antiquity site. However, the history of mini-carving art is not so long in Yuyao. As the only one mini-carving craftsman in Yuyao, Master Li Qici started to grope the craft of mini-carving and he collected the introduction materials of famous mini-carving artists from each and every source, studied these materials hardly on his own. Through many years of efforts and researches, he finally became one of the mini-carving craftsmen with his mini-carving product coming out in early 80’s. From then on, his skill was getting better and better and every time his work came out, his work was highly evaluated home and abroad. On the basis of inheriting the traditional mini-carving craft, Li Qici actively carried out a series of innovations and he beached the limitation of simplex colors of mini-carving to practice colorful mini-carving of multiplayer. Besides, he applied the technique of oil painting to the mini-carving in order to invent solid mini-carving. One of his works reserved the developing trend of miniature calibers with the smallest of 1mm and thus had become the masterwork of Chinese painting. The works of Li Qici have been sent to America, Japanese and Taiwan for exhibition and have obtained many prizes home and abroad. In 1987, the “the portraits of 39 American previous presidents” carved on the ivory granule that was exhibited in Los Angles, created a sensation and every day thousands of visitors went to the exhibition hall so that the sponsor was forced to make a decision that every visitor had at most only ten seconds to appreciate this work in order to meet the requirements of the majority. In 1991, the ivory mini-carving, “portraits of 100 celebrities in the world culture”, was exhibited in US and this work was awarded the special achievement prize by the fifth American Annual Session of Inventors. The magnum opuses of Li Qici also includes the solid portrait of the Sitting Amitabha, which is only as big as 1/4 of a granule, the colorful mini-carving “Picture of Ten Dances”, the pictures of Tang and Song Poetries, the interior mini-carving of world famous paintings and the famous picture of “the Downtown in the Season of Qingming” a well as the calligraphy carved on a piece of hair. He also carved the portraits for a lot of celebrities such as Shao Yifu, Bao Yugang, Zhu Yifeng, etc, making great efforts for the municipal friendship activities and disseminating the sparkling folk culture in our country to the outside world.
