Five Ningbo athletes have so far qualified for the upcoming London Olympic Games, said Lei Wangjun, deputy director of the Municipal Sports Bureau. The number is a record high for Ningbo after it sent four athletes to the Atlantic Olympic Games in 1996. The five athletes are Dong Cheng, Li Jinzi, Ren Cancan, Wang Shun, and Li Ling, who will compete in boxing, swimming, and pole vault.
Last Sunday, Ningbo-born swimmer Wang Shun, together with his teammate, world champion Sun Yang, left for the London Olympic Games. This is Wang Shun’s first Olympic trip. He is among the third group of Chinese swimmers, which also includes world champions Zhao Jing and Ye Shiwen.
Wang Shun won the bronze medal of the men's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay on the 14th FINA World Championships held in Shanghai on July 29, 2011. Swimming the first leg in the relay, Wang Shun secured gold medal in the men's 400m individual medley event at National Swimming Championships with 4:11.61, breaking the Asian record and national record. His excellent performance as well as his diligent training in Australia gets him the opportunity to swim at the Olympics. According to an official from Ningbo Swimming Association, Wang Shun will participate in the 200 meters individual medley race in the upcoming London Olympic Games. He might participate in the relay events depending on his performance.
